First World Problems was an exhibition of mixed media works, some older and many new, held at the Trianon Gallery in downtown Lethbridge. The show ran June 17 – August 30, 2023.
Artist Statement: ‘First World Problems’ was chosen as the theme of my recent work as it is a relatable term used in western culture to identify a sense of gratefulness for not having worse problems. ‘First World Problems’ are seen as complaints about trivial issues in a global context. This body of work is an exercise in awareness and self-reflection. Working on these paintings was a productive creative outlet during a time when a ‘first world problem’ was descending upon my overall mood.
As a practicing community nurse, I work closely with the effects of social determinants such as income, education, and access to resources, just to name a few. This body of work was my privilege to create while exercising an art practice that lends itself to thinking recreationally about these things. ‘First World Problems’ is my attempt to represent our existence in western culture, and the serious but ‘minor problems’ that self-indulgence, ego-centrism, and greed create.
